Storing bread: 8 tips

1. use a bread bin: A bread bin is one of the best ways to keep bread fresh. It protects against light, moisture and air, which can cause bread to dry out more quickly. Bread bins are available in various designs, including those with a roll-top lid, sliding lid or bamboo lid.

2. avoid the fridge: Bread should not be stored in the fridge, as the cold can cause it to dry out more quickly. The only exception to this is homemade bread, which contains no preservatives and spoils quickly.

3. cut the bread only when needed: the bread will keep its freshness longer if it is only cut when you want to eat it. Exposed bread dries out more quickly.

4. store bread at room temperature: Ideally, bread should be stored at room temperature in a dry and dark area. Avoid storing it near heat sources such as the hob or toaster.

5. freeze bread: If you want to keep bread for longer, you can freeze it. First wrap it airtight in plastic film or freezer bags. The bread can then be defrosted and reheated as required.

6. avoid direct contact with air: If you do not have a bread box or bread bag to hand, wrap the bread in wax paper or aluminium foil to minimise direct contact with air.

7. keep the bread clean: make sure your hands are clean when touching bread to avoid contamination that could affect its shelf life.

8. use older bread first: If you have several types of bread, be sure to use older bread first to ensure that nothing goes to waste.
